Detroit Festivals: Labors of love
Despite sporadic showers, including a Monday night storm that washed out the last couple of acts at the Detroit Jazz Festival, residents flocked to events over the Labor Day weekend for food, music and other entertainment.
During the ceremonial last weekend of summer, crowds packed the jazz festival at Campus Martius, Arts, Beats & Eats in Royal Oak and the reinvented Fifth Third Bank Michigan State Fair in Novi.
Event planners for Arts, Beats & Eats say that through Sunday, attendance was nearly 300,000, one of the best years on record for the festival, held for the fifth straight year in Royal Oak after relocating from Pontiac.
Fair and jazz festival officials could not be reached Monday night for attendance figures.
